Okay, so this song is based on a principle I hold that making promises is a bunch of bullshit. Lol. Seriously, if you think about it, what is a promise other than saying we intend to not break it? There are no absolutes in agreements between people.

Truly though, this song is about wanting to leave a relationship after promising/expecting to be together until death. It is based on the idea that we can make a promise to someone at a particular moment in time, then change our minds years later. The question is this: why in the hell would anyone put themselves through hell just to keep their word to the person they now don't love?

Whenever anyone asks me if I can keep a secret I respond with "it is my full intention to keep your secret", and that is because what if telling your secret saves your life, or my life, or anyone's life?!?! Some promises have terms that should be broken, so its best to just stop pretending that promises really mean anything more than "I intend to...". We always think of them as meaning, absolutely, "I will not...", but that is garbage.

Moral of the story: don't feel bad for leaving someone you love if it means finding growth in your own life. You deserve to be fulfilled, no matter if it means going back on your word. Just say sorry afterwards and wish them the best. Its hard at first, but both parties will likely benefit as a result. Lyrics Genius analysis here!

Promises (lyrics)

I’ve promised you so much

But I’ve just wasted your time

When my front door looks like home

I know its time to go, I know I’ve made up my mind

All these things that I’m lacking

Are the things that make me whole

Keep up with the times and talk right girl

I’ll be out on my own, I’ll be out on that road

I’ve got to go on my own way

Gotta sleep the night alone

Lookin’ for some answers

Maybe France or maybe Mexico

Promises are stories yet told

An apple, it falls down

Leaving there a little bruise

But you know that when autumn falls

Apple pie is on that menu

Darlin' please don’t misunderstand

I would give to you my life

But I’ll be there on the outskirts of town

Never makin' up, never makin' up my mind

‘cause you know that when the season comes

I’ll put you back up on that shelf

I could be an honest man

And keep on lyin’ to myself, but no

‘cause promises are stories yet told

Promises are stories yet told

I remember that moonlit night

When I swept you right off your feet

Right then we promised that we’d always be

My love, together forever, did we? No

‘cause promises are stories…

Promises are just stories

Promises are stories yet told

Promises are stories yet

Told

Promises are stories yet told

Promises are stories yet told
